In the last chapter Sagan raises issues about the dangers and absurdity of nuclear proliferation and the ridiculous amount of resources spent on war or the possibility of war. Finally, the last chapter is sadly as relevant today as it was back then. It also gives a wonderful history of astronomy, as mentioned before. But above all that, I'd say the biggest merit of this book is it made me want to go outside and just look at the vast sky above and the stars that fill it. Just like Carl Sagan was looking at early astronomers' work and appreciating it with the benefit of hindsight, today's amateur astronomers can look at Carl Sagan's book and get a better understanding of the recent scientific history, with its debates and evolution. For the literate astronomers this can also be regarded as a sample of history. For people just getting introduced to astronomy it is still close enough to present views of the universe to give a good introduction and understanding. While some scientific aspects in the book might have changed in the meantime, the book is still as valuable today as it was almost 40 years ago. Scalzi has won the Hugo for best novel before - for the thoroughly enjoyable and clever Redshirts - and although Collapsing Empire isn’t as clever or enjoyable as Redshirts, it isn’t a failure. Why was this book nominated? This book was nominated because it’s by John Scalzi and because the book is pleasant to read. To sneak Marce past the youngest Nohamapetan scion, who is playing both ends against the middle on the End, the scientist gets help from Kiva, a member of another powerful family, rivals of the Nohamapetans. This frequently happens on the End, so what’s more important is that a scientist Cardenia’s father dispatched to the End has confirmed his fear: The Flow, the phenomena that allows for faster-than-light travel through the Interdependency’s interstellar settlements, is failing, and soon each world in the Interdependency will be on its own - bad news for an empire named after each settlement’s dependence on the others.Īs Cardenia is attacked by unknown assailants and courted by the unremarkable eldest son of the powerful Nohamapetan family, the scientist dispatches his son, Marce, to the emperox on the Hub. What is this book about? As Cardenia, the born-out-of-wedlock, unexpected emperox of the Interdependency, ascends to the throne of her family’s space empire, revolution is occurring on the far-off world of the End. The third nominee for the Hugo for best novel is The Collapsing Empire by John Scalzi: Do you think a romantic relationship between them will ensue? How much does Garnett's unrecognized longing for love and human contact account for the shift in his perception of Nannie and the greater world around him? What else influences the shift in Garnett? Does Nannie change as well?ĥ. When Nannie and Garnett hug, a huge barrier between them drops and they both gain a basic understanding of each other's humanness and vulnerability. How does the relationship between Deanna and Eddie Bondo change them both? Should Deanna have told Eddie about the pregnancy? Do you think he already knew and that was one of the reasons he left when he did?Ĥ. Is she disturbingnature's own ways of dealing with upsets? What about Garnett and his quest for a blight-free chestnut tree-is this "good" for nature?ģ. Deanna is the self-appointed protector of coyotes and all predators. Why do you think this book is entitled Prodigal Summer? In what ways do all of the characters display "prodigal" characteristics? Who, or what, welcomes them home from their journeys?Ģ. Those somewhere in the middle are hardbound (unfortunately there is no illustrated edition, otherwise I would still have bought them). These include: The Silmarillion, The Children of Hurin, The Lord of the Rings, and The Hobbit. Those I like the most are in illustrated, hardbound edition. I bought the book editions according to my story/content preference. The Lord of the Rings Trilogy (Houghton Mifflin)*+.The Children of Hurin (Harper Collins)*+.Return to Bagend (The History of the Hobbit II).
WHAT KIND OF 25-YEAR-OLD WRITES A MEMOIR? “People are always curious about the place.”Īlthough many such memoirs are not about Harvard per se, the name and place are tied inextricably to the stories, and the memoirists would argue they couldn’t be set anywhere else. “I’m not sure if I would have been able to write the book and get it published if it didn’t take place at Harvard,” Wurtzel says. “Having a bad depression and getting help and medication happens all over the place, but the specifics are really important,” says Elizabeth Wurtzel, author of Prozac Nation, a memoir of her depression that began when she was eleven or twelve and unfolded throughout her undergraduate years. When “An Expensive Education”, a novel by Nick McDonell ’06-’07 came out this summer, Harvard was, once again, fictionalized and seen anew through the eyes of a recent graduate.īut while McDonell explained that his focus was on writing an engaging spy novel rather than on representing the setting where so much of the novel unfolds, a number of young authors who choose to write about Harvard instead decide to incorporate the institution into their own stories. Today, CATCHPLAY continues to look into investment and co-production opportunities internationally and in Asia targeting particularly Chinese-speaking territories and South East Asia following our recent expansion footprints.ĬATCHPLAY started placing significant emphasis on the development of digital movie content years before the others did in Taiwan. In the same year, CATCHPLAY also provided financing and local production support to director Martin Scorsese’s passion project Silence, making it the first international production filmed entirely in Taiwan. CATCHPLAY and partners also control exclusive distribution rights to these films in Taiwan, China, Hong Kong and Macau, with The Revenant generating outstanding box office results from these territories in 2016. In early 2015, we closed a partnership deal to invest in New Regency’s three enthralling titles, namely The Revenant, Assassin’s Creed and Splinter Cell, marking the first investment of a Taiwanese company in major Hollywood productions. Both investments generated considerable box office performance in Taiwan and China respectively. In the same year, we invested in the locally produced film, Paradise in Service and co-produced 20 Once Again with CJ Entertainment for the Chinese market. In 2014, in addition to distributing the movies CATCHPLAY loves, we embarked in earnest co-production and investment projects, venturing into content creation. Not being suitable or not being loved back is bad enough, but to say that I wasn't stimulating? Ouch. And the biscuit took three years and only the threat of more intimacy to come out. "In the long run, I'm looking for somebody more stimulating and exciting." That really took the biscuit. This book is laugh out loud funny but still has a lot of heart and touching moments. While reading I became one of the girls and could relate on so many levels. This fun little tale was hard to put down as I enjoyed all the clever comments and turn of events. I connected to the the characters from the very beginning. I really got a kick out of the sharp dialog and the sarcastic undertone. There is a Sex in the City flare with a Million Dollar Matchmaker similarity in a smarter package. The story is witty and entertaining and the writing was fun and jovial. I really enjoyed the flavor of Next Time Lucky. |
